HalfBloodPrince

Fri Jul 17, 2009, 8:13 AM
Ok. Here comes the review. I have nowhere else to post it.. so.. sorry.

Bring on the Spoilers!!

Ok. I loved the opening scene with Bella's voice in the background, I thought that was a really nice touch, it just sort of brought you back in to the story in a really good way. I loved Dumbledore in the train station and the girl in the cafe.. it made me smile a lot.

Jim Broadbent was fabulous, just as he was in Moulin Rouge. He couldn't have played Slughorn any better. His eyebrows just made the character for me.

The Unbreakable Vow scene was perfection for me. Snape's house was almost exactly as I imagined it, although I always thought he would live right at the end of the street. But now I'm just being picky. It never said that in the books. The one thing that annoyed me in this scene was Narcissa's hair. It should have been completely blonde, like she was the polar opposite of Bella..

A lot of people have had a problem with Helena Bonham Carter in this film.. I just thought she didn't have enough to do.. Alan Rickman totally steals any scene he is in, so she didn't have a chance.

The first thing that really annoyed me, and Richard who I was sitting next to noticed me go "grr" was that Luna found Harry on the train. I love Luna. Don't get me wrong, but it should have been Tonks. Remus and Tonks were my favourite couple in the series so the fact that they didn't get their full screen time annoyed me, although she did call him "sweetheart" and they did get a cool action sequence later on.

I was very impressed with Daniel Radcliffe, he's really picked up his acting and I actually believed what he was doing rather than constantly living in his personal angst cloud being all alone and alienated in a Buffy Summers type way.

I always pick up on the tiny details and the writing in the Advanced Potions book was exactly how I pictured Snape's writing.. I don't know why..

Tom Felton was pretty amazing too! When he was in the bathroom, that crying scene was so real... but I think that Sectumsempra seemed to hardly do anything.. he should have been more cut up than that, but it was a 12A so I can forgive them..

The missing out of Hermione's Eileen Prince discovery completely undermined the revelation of Snape as the Half Blood Prince. It made hardly any sense. Why was he half blood? Why Prince? It needed that.

The Dumbledore death scene was fantastic, and Mr Rickman stole it again.. I'm so glad that they put in the "Do you ever think you're asking too much" scene. The way he stopped on the stairs after passing Harry tore me up...

And as they walked through the Great Hall and Snape stunned the person, aaah.. I loved it. Alhtough once again, Helena Bonham Carter had to do with making a lot of noise to get screen time..

They could have made more of the run to the gates. Richard had to ask me why they were doing that.. But I loved the "FIGHT BACK YOU COWARD" moment.

Overall I loved it. More than I loved OotP. I do want to go and see it again.

Did anyone else think that the teenage Tom Riddle was exactly like the guy from the Doctor Who episode "Family of Blood"?? It was uncanny.

EDIT: More spoilers!!!

did anyone else think that they totally undermine Harry's whole character in the Dumbledore death scene. I was thinking back over it last night, and in the novel, the only reason Harry didn't intervene was because he couldn't! Dumbledore's man through and through, he would have done everything in his power to stop him being hurt. But no. In the film, Harry stands below in full view of what is happening and does nothing. Harry wouldn't do that. Harry would disregard his own life and run up there and disarm Snape. That really upset me.

Spoilers end here

Go see it! It was amazing! Davids Yates and Heyman did it again. :]
